Homelessness in Numbers

In order to really get a sense of how big of an issue homelessness is in America, here are some numbers.
  • From 2008 to 2009, the number of homeless families and individuals increased greatly in the Boston area. This shows that despite efforts, homelessness is continuing to grow. I think awareness on the issue is key in making that number decrease.
  • Roughly 20,000 people are homeless in Massachusetts, and 3,000 of them are students who attend Boston Public Schools.
  • There are many things that hold children back from being able to enroll in school, like residency requirements, guardianship requirements, delays in transfer of school records, lack of transportation, and lack of immunization records.
  • In an article released in 2008, there was a 25% rise in the number of homeless families seeking service since 2006.
  • 1 in 33 children in Massachusetts do not know where they will get their next meal.
